“I was a widow of a living husband,” said the influencer during a live video on social media.
Alexandre Thomaz and Renata Giaffredo announced the end of their marriage this Monday (12th) on their respective social media profiles. The now-former couple met on the Netflix reality show Love is Blind: A fresh start and spent some time together in an “open relationship” before their divorce.
“Everything I experienced on the reality show was real,” Renata admitted during an extended Instagram live session in the evening. “I got married traditionally – it was a dream of mine, and it was always something very important to me. It was beautiful, very emotional, and I fulfilled a dream. But life outside the experiment was completely different.”
During the show’s reunion, filmed a year after the end of the series, they revealed to the other participants that they had been in an open relationship. “We did, in fact, spend some time in a traditional relationship. When we started to see that the traditional relationship wasn’t working anymore, we decided to open it up to see if that would help. For me, the open system doesn’t work. I’m jealous, very traditional, and I couldn’t handle it. I tried, we tried,” she stated during the live session.
Even during the reality show, the couple had mentioned that, despite being married, they would live in separate houses initially. “You know what my idea was? After some time, I thought that if things worked out, we would eventually live together. There’s no such thing as getting married and each person living in their own house,” she complained. “I’m not putting the blame on him. We need communication, that’s what marriage is about.”
“We lacked maturity; we weren’t mature enough to handle an open relationship,” she admitted. “I couldn’t keep living a lie; it was already suffocating me (…) The relationship had been broken since the moment we said ‘I do.’ Since I had a dream of getting married, having kids, and a family, I blinded myself to where this was heading.”
She also described herself as a “widow of a living husband” while married to Alexandre. “There were moments when he wasn’t present, and that’s okay. But eventually, it gets tiring, just as it did for me, and he must have gotten tired too,” she said.
Alexandre acknowledged that he stopped appearing in photos with Renata on social media due to the difficult period they were facing as a couple. “For those who don’t know, we filmed Love is Blind over a year ago and stayed together throughout that time. Renata and I have a good relationship. You might notice that we haven’t posted things together, [precisely] because we were at a point where we didn’t know what to do. We wanted to give it time and see if separation was really what was going to happen,” he explained in his Stories.
